How Do I Know If My Marketing Is Actually Making Money?

Your marketing is making money when it brings in customers worth more than the effort required to win them, and the result is reliable enough that you would confidently fund it again.

A busy marketing report can create the feeling that something is working. Traffic climbed. The phone rang. An email earned clicks. A campaign generated leads. None of those results tells you whether the business ended up better off.

The clearest answer lives at the customer level, not inside a dashboard.

Your marketing is making money when it repeatedly brings in customers whose value to the business is greater than what it took to win them. The result should survive three questions: Did a real customer buy? Was that customer worth acquiring? Would you confidently pay to create another customer through the same path?

If you cannot answer all three, you do not necessarily have bad marketing. You have an unanswered business question.

The three-question money test

  1. Did a real customer buy? Choose a completed sale, paid job, or active customer, not a click, inquiry, estimate, or uncollected invoice.
  2. Was the customer worth acquiring? Consider the money kept from the sale and the real effort required to produce it. A large sale can still be a poor result if little value remains.
  3. Would you buy another one the same way? This is the practical test. If the answer is yes, you have something to grow. If it is maybe, find the missing evidence. If it is no, fix or stop the activity.

This test does not require perfect attribution. It requires enough evidence to make the next budget decision without letting the most flattering platform report decide for you.

A 60-second reality check

Pick one customer you were happy to win. Write down how they first heard about you, what convinced them to act, what they bought, and whether you would pay the same amount to win another customer like them.

If you cannot complete that sentence, you just found the gap your reporting needs to close.
