What Does It Mean for My Website to Be "AI-Ready"?

An AI-ready website performs equally well for human visitors and AI agents (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, AI browsers). Clean HTML, a complete schema graph, AI-aware robots.txt, and content AI can quote without rendering JavaScript.

Your website used to have one audience. It now has two: the human visitor and the AI agent acting on their behalf. When a buyer asks ChatGPT for a vendor recommendation, runs a Google search that returns an AI Overview, or browses with an AI assistant like Perplexity Comet or ChatGPT Atlas, an AI reads your site and decides whether to surface you in the answer. If the site is hard for the AI to parse, you do not show up.

An AI-ready website performs equally well for the human visitor and for the AI agent acting on their behalf. It serves clean HTML, exposes structured machine-readable data, ships a complete schema graph, allows the major AI crawlers, and presents pricing, FAQs, and contact information that an AI can quote without rendering JavaScript.

The fixes that make your site AI-friendly are mostly the same fixes that make it human-friendly: fast, accessible, structured, and transparent.

What an AI-ready website has

Four layers, in build order:

  1. Performance and accessibility. Core Web Vitals in the green and WCAG 2.2 AA as the floor.

  2. Content architecture. Lead every section with the answer. Tables for comparisons, lists for steps, FAQ blocks for common questions.

  3. Machine-readable layer. A complete schema graph (Organization, WebPage, Article, FAQPage, and more), an AI-aware robots.txt, and standard files at your site root: llms.txt, pricing.md, AGENTS.md, sitemap.xml.

  4. Trust and conversion signals. Real author bios with Person schema, visible "last updated" dates, original data, visible starting pricing, and CTAs that work for browsers and AI agents.

A 30-second self-test

Paste your URL into ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask the assistant to summarize what your business does, what it costs, and how to contact you. The gaps in the answer are the gaps on your site.
