# Why Isn't My Business Showing in the Top 3 of Google Maps Results?
## A complete Google Business Profile makes you eligible for the map. Six signals decide whether you land in the top three: your categories, the page your profile links to, your hours, your reviews, the edits on your listing, and the paid row above it.
Google's own help page says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. It names three things that decide the map instead: relevance, distance, and prominence. That leaves a gap between doing everything the setup checklist asked and seeing three competitors sit above you anyway. The gap is almost never a broken profile.

The order after that comes from a short list of signals the checklist never asks about: your exact primary and additional categories, the page your profile links to, whether you're open at the moment of the search, how recent your reviews are and what they say, whether anyone is defending the listing from edits and spam, and, in some industries, whether you're paying for the ads above the map.**
In plain terms: matching those signals to the search better than the three businesses above you is what moves you in.
### The Six Signals That Decide the Order
1. **Your categories.** The primary category is the #1 Google Maps ranking factor in Whitespark's 2026 ranking survey, and additional categories are #8.
2. **The page your profile links to.** Your name, address, and phone should match the profile exactly, with your service and city in the title and first heading.
3. **Hours, services, and the pin.** Being open when someone searches is the #5 factor, and your services list should use the words customers type.
4. **Reviews that name the job and the place.** Recent reviews with real detail help your rank and shape the summary Google writes above them.
5. **Defending the listing.** A stranger's suggested edit can go live after four days if your website backs it up, so someone has to watch for it.
6. **The paid row above the pack.** In home services and legal, Local Services Ads sit above the map. Whether they pay off is arithmetic, not opinion.
### A 60-Second Category Check
Open Google Maps on your phone and search your main service plus your city. Write down the category printed under each of the top three names. If yours doesn't match the category winning that search, or the winners cover a service you offer and your profile doesn't list it, that's the first gap to close. Only add a category you'd defend on the phone.
